the internet is about collaboration

a friend of mine made (most) of this for me based, as you might guess, on how funny we think we are. i then complained that 'nice' was not on the list. i am a big fan of that word, and did not think it fair -- nay, nice -- to have it left off. i wasn't sure of the point spread for nice so i opted for something more precious.

that's right. animated sheep. and if you're lucky, LOTS of them.

HAppy Friday. :)

the power of boop

running an errand at lunch, a white sedan behind me had the name and picture of betty b00p airbrushed onto the hood. as you can see there, this is still odd, but at least it's tastefully small. the one i saw pretty much filled the entire hood of the car. not really what i expected to see when i adjusted my mirror.

so...what message or image would you airbrush onto your car, if you had the time, inclination and, let's say, free cash to do it? i'm thinking something along the lines of R0N PAUL 08. because i also saw him at lunch, in the form of a forlorn sign littering a corporate courtyard, and i think the ol codger could use a pick me up.

and now, some minor word amusement

in the Incredibly Pleased With Myself Department: i used the word mahogany in a sentence today. a Serious sentence, mind you. but still, FlagSelfAmusementEnabled.

in the Thank God You Don't Spellcheck Department: i read a submission today with the phrase "terror fying". as in, "terror fying screams". because as everyone knows, only seriously scary screams are the result of unadulterated terror fying. also, terror fying is the #1 cause of giggling in my cube.

for the love of beef

in more recent news, today
on the way
to safeway:

i "steered" through a juicy part of town, aka beef bend road.

incidentally, bull mountain road is also nearby, lest
you think i jest.

and on a deli sign:
EVERYONE LOVES BBQ
EXCEPT THE PIG

until the next meaty installment,
heather

going to the salon is so old school

are you tired of having to explain what you *really* want to your hairdresser or barber? not to mention, shelling out for that haircut several times a year? well, thanks to this morning's internet, i offer you a possible solution:

THE FLOWBEE

as a bonus, apparently in your post-haircut bliss, you will get to see a vacuum hose and what looks like a giant flashlight fight to the death:

haircut clean up is only a suction away. please, act now, or else i will flowbee you a second time.

while not the wittiest thing ever

you have to love a thread that makes you say this:
I'm sorry, I don't understand. I only know how to sacrifice the ultimate goal of letting things grow in.
people, they are very special sometimes.

and on a related (internet) note, today liz and i stumbled into a very geeky, very FlagSelfAmusementEnabled situation. we were on our way back from caffienieing and discussing Ye Olde Internet. the unix-based kind, where TALKing and fingering (hottt!) people was commonplace. we decided that after we got back to our desk, trying to TALK could be very entertaining.

i know, geeks.

well, there is no TALK. daemonpunkass sez no. but i found out there is a happy medium between that and mail: write. write works like an instant message. pops up on your screen (twice actually, once with an EOF, then later the actual message), then you can reply.

anyway, let's just say, there was a lot of write-ing going on. and the giggling, holy crap.

laugh at me. us. i don't care. it was stupid fun and if i am pro anything, it is stupid fun. i really don't think there can be enough of that in a workday. well, at least until the time i say it's time to stop because i really really have to work now. and yes, if i continue anyway, you are to pretend the previous statement was never uttered.

to see me grin like an idiot, say:

ROTFLMAO You so totally rock.
this in response to my briliance (of course).

anyone could make me grin with this comment. others could make me grin like an idiot. for the moment, i'm happy to be an idiot.

i knownst how to gigglst

overheard in a meeting: maybe unknownst to you...

immediately i tuned out and thought: but knownst to us!

and then i'm like, where the hell is that from? immediately i wrote it down so as not to forget. thanks to the internet, i was reminded that it's a line from this bit of excellence.

there are SO many good quotes from this movie that i'm hard pressed to pick a favorite. meantime here's the one i use almost every time i vacuum: She's gone from suck to blow!

ok back to work.

khaaaaan!

in planning yesterday's forays outside the home, min mentioned she might like to see a movie. while i finished puttering, she browsed the internet to this end. and in the end, the only good thing she came up with was topper at the stanford theatre.

now topper is a fun little movie and i do love me some cary grant. back when i used to drool over men, i had this poster of him from north by northwest on my wall.

but we weren't crazy about the times for it, so i sat down to look as well. and after a few moments i said, 'oh, man! star trek 2 the wrath of khan is playing at the del mar, but at midnight!'

min instantly surprised me by suggesting we could go out, run our errands, come home for a nap, and then go to the movie. i laughed. because, yeah right! come midnight -- let alone 3 am, which would be the earliest we'd get home -- our asses are in bed. maybe not long for mine, but she'd have been down for hours.

i went to get dressed. i couldn't stop thinking about it. star trek! on the big screen! Fun! Prizes! Montalban! i said as much and min repeated her napping suggestion.

and i am very happy to report she actually made it! she has been having a real hard time with her teeth and stomach lately, so i really thought the movie wasn't going to happen. we got there a few minutes late and thus missed getting tickets for the drawing (see: Prizes!), but what was really awesome was who won: a young boy in a star trek (TNG) uniform. he was so happy and adorable. one of his prizes was a foam khan-esque muscle suit. heh.

oh and the movie, much fun. apart from the movie itself, it's been a while since i've been to anything fannish, and really enjoyed the extra giggles and cheers at some of the cooler...and campier...elements of the show that trek fans appreciate. anyway, not a bad way to spend a saturday night. :)

Club Velour - Buttery Duck Night Tonight!!!

this just in!
Want to shake some booty with the ladeez? Don't go to Velvet - that's for losers and non-disabled gestalt lovers. Come to Oakland's Club Velour where leadership is mixed and so are the drinks! Every night is ladeez night because no one likes The Man, not even The Man Who Helps Keep This Place In Bidness. But pay no attention to him, the Negress will have him out the door soon.

Speaking of which, you can't get butter from a duck, but at Club Velour you can try. You've been dreaming of it, now Buttery Duck Night is here! Ladeez, water fowl, butter and butter substitutes will be slip slidin' away tonight to a torrent of non-stop, pseudo-masculine energy beats!

Go Faux. Go Velour!
all i can say is, it amazes me how worked up people can get over a club.

also, apologies to those of you who already saw this, but i know there are some sappho readers on here who hadn't, and this seemed a fun one to share here. we can't have snowflake complaining about the lack of posts from her readers. ;-)

and now in the original (at least, not created by me dept), i bring your attention to the plight of gnomes without homes. a very serious business!

finally, in case you hadn't guessed, those spells of nothingness at work i thought i'd get to have? LIES. or at least, they were shamefully short-lived. ugh. is it friday yet?

sounds perfect to me

i'm sure it's all those answers about reading books that did me in...

The Monk

You scored 13% Cardinal, 66% Monk, 50% Lady, and 43% Knight!
You live a peaceful, quiet life. Very little danger comes your way and you live a long time. You are wise and modest, but also stagnant. You have little comfort, little food and have taken a vow of silence. But who needs chatter when just sitting in the cloister of your abbey with The Good Book makes you perfectly content.

as if you needed more proof

that things are calming down a little at work (albeit temporarily) here are two more random things:

- spam (from liz, who i regularly exchange funny spam with) that said:
We live in a century of improbable technologies such as self-cooled beer, artificial retinas of the eye, full automated factories.
made me start wondering about this self-cooling beer. was it real? and turns out, it will be very soon.

- announcement involving a guy called knish, leading to a google image search for gluten-free knish, for which the only search result is this.

ok back to bug researching. :)

typo of the day

"The most important part is the presence of the scrollbards"

scrollbards! wandering around the streets of england, looking for someone to buy their carefully scribed collection of words. we should all be so lucky to have the presence of scrollbards.

and in a retroactive typo of the day, a recent favorite is butto. as in:

"Please use the code below or create a similar butto:"

o butto, how i love thee. you have butto-d your way into my heart.

word geek extraordinaire

today i was browsing presurfer, which - true to its subtitle - is often diverting on a daily basis, and came across the surprisingly addictive wordie.

the concept is so simple it borders on boring: make a list of words. words you adore, despise, etc.

i thought, what the hell, i'll check it out. so i'm browsing the homepage, enjoying beautiful, complex words, words that sound funny, when i stumbled onto kleptocracy. someone made that up, right? but no! and, how awesome that word is! does it not describe almost every goverment on the planet?

at this point i was officially hooked. i added a few words, but really all i had to do was keep refreshing the homepage and someone had posted, or made me think of, a word i adored in some way. there's an rss feed for new words and i can tell i'll be geeking out left and right.

btw if you want to see what words amuse or move me, here's my list. 52 words are enough for now, because i've really spent too much time there today already. :-o
